About the Project

The operation of healthcare facilities is a massive undertaking for any government or local council. Automating some of the hundreds of daily measures taken to ensure patient safety was something that definitely caught my eye as a meaningful project that could make an impact on the world!

Sterilization is an important aspect of a healthcare facilities’ day to day schedule. Ensuring that medical equipment is safely contained and cleaned for patients is crucial in ensuring disease control and proper health and safety standards. Automating this process would reduce the amount of work undertaken by healthcare professionals and ensure a high degree of cleanliness!

Each team was divided into two sub-teams: one of which is responsible for the prototyping of models in CAD environments, while the other programmed the relevant automation processes.

Primary Function of Prototype

To streamline and automate the process of sterilizing surgical equipment

Design Sub-Team

As a member of the design sub-team, we were in charge of designing an enclosure that medical tools could be placed in prior to the sterilization process. This was a vital step of the process, as the sterilizer that was used by the healthcare facility would only fit certain sized containers, and using these dimensions was essential to reduce any costs that may come with installing a new system.

The container we designed also had some other key design considerations in mind, including how light the container would be, and whether the robotic arm would be able to easily pick up the machine.
